During the 4-5 years of stalking activity the different apartments I lived in were broken into and surveillance equipment was installed. I remember the first time/apartment I became aware that whatever I said or did was being watched. I was sitting there going, “great, so where do I start in finding the camera(s)?”. I came to a couple of conclusions.

It’s somewhat difficult to find the correct equipment for locating surveillance equipment. I mean there are cheapo RF detectors and on up through various degrees of similar products. The problem with these is that you’re likelier to freak yourself out than to actually find a hidden camera or bug. These lower-end detectors’ indicator lights/sounds will go off for any number of reasons. There are higher-end devices that can find such things (a great affordable (depending on your budget) gadget that will single out hidden surveillance devices from background noise can be found here), but I advise that you don’t get caught up in using detectors all the time.

What’s more, if someone really realllly wants to spy on you, there are other ways -more advanced camera/bug equipment that is more difficult to detect or altogether different means of seeing through walls. So…

I’ve found the following 2 approaches to be much more effective than never-ending scanning/detecting:

When I first started getting these psychic impressions (symbolism and such) that I was being spied on I started doing crazy things that I imagined most people wouldn’t do, or if they did, would not want others to see. It’s very freeing to outright shrug off all cares about who sees what. Fuck them. If they want to watch, give them a show.

So the above works quite well, but there are still valid reasons to NOT WANT others to spy on you. If you’re determined to make a clean break from cameras and bugs, I recommend this approach. Barring see-through-walls x-ray etc technology, a simple thing you can do (I say simple, but moving is hardly that, now is it?) is start from scratch and then install some surveillance gear of your own.

Ok, so most targeted folks (I’m assuming from my experience and knowledge shared by others) probably don’t have such a huge campaign against them that they have to worry about covering their tracks in finding the next place to live. But if you feel uncomfortable about that, just think it through and do most of your searching online at a library and make calls inquiring about the apartment/house similarly. This may sound paranoid to some, but the logic here is that I’ve lived in some nicer places and still had bribed-maintenance-people illegally enter my home. After all it’s the janitors and maintenance people of the world who have access to many protected areas and generally go unseen and underpaid.

Motion Detection Home Surveillance

So you’re about to move into your new abode. Buy some cheap web cams. Any will do, the detail/resolution level is up to you, as it’s the software that will do the work.

Download and install a webcam capture application such as Dorgem. Dorgem is a MS-Windows app, there are others, but I’ll leave that to your researching skills. For linux Ubuntu, check out Motion. (perhaps do a search for motion ubuntu ftp if you want a good guide on getting everything configured)

Most capture applications have a motion detection option. Good capture apps will have image as well as video capture options. You may want to select ‘image’ versus video or the filesize may quickly get out of hand.

Look for a webcam capture application that has the option of uploading captures to a web server rather than just to your local machine. (Dorgem does this). This is nice so you don’t have to worry about what would happen to your evidence if your computer gets stolen.

It will take a little fiddling to get lighting and webcam capture settings correct, but all-in-all, a very simple yet effective counter-measure that doesn’t cost very much money.
